FNQ people are encouraged to join in National Volunteer Week celebrations which kicked off today (Monday 8 May), with events and activities to recognise the achievements of all volunteers.
Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the week was dedicated to acknowledging the thousands of volunteers right across our state for their contribution to the community.
“From fire-fighters to teachers, gardeners to coaches, volunteers make a huge difference to support our local community,” Mr Crawford said.
“This week is the perfect opportunity for everyone to show their appreciation of volunteers by getting involved in a range of events from breakfasts, morning/afternoon teas, luncheons, open days, award ceremonies, picnics, forums and training sessions.
“It’s a time to shine a light on all those amazing people and show them how much we appreciate the wonderful work they do to support each and every one of us.”
Mr Crawford said volunteering has many benefits.
“This year’s theme, ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’ follows on from research that says volunteers are happier, healthier and even sleep better than those who don’t volunteer,” Mr Crawford said.
“I urge anyone who is considering volunteering to take action this week and join the thousands of volunteers right across our state who are making a real difference in our community.
“It’s not only a great way to learn new skills and make new friends but also provides a wonderful opportunity to give back to your local community.”
